“Put him down and step away!” one officer shouted, his voice cracking as he looked at Miller’s desperate face. I didn’t move my knee from Miller’s back, keeping my eyes fixed on the newcomers with a cold, unyielding authority.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small leather wallet that held my true identity. I flipped it open, and the gold shield of a Detective Inspector glinted under the chandeliers, stopping the patrolmen in their tracks.
